eng	Railway as a Part of Integrated Transportion System in Germany	Since the beginning of the 90s, the development and the modernization of the railway system (including suburban and regional rail, tubes, light rail and trams) is placed at the centre of endeavour to increase the number of passengers and to substitute car-user by user of local public transport. In this context, the comparison of over 100 cities and agglomerations in Germany shows considerable differences, not only between the old and the new lands. Referring to empirical studies, factors of success for light-rail-systems (incl. modernized trams) will be presented as well as results of an evaluation of measures to increase the number of passengers of local public transport under the aspect of efficiency.	rail suburban transport, railway systems, suburban agglomeration
