eng Contribution of active elements in locomotive running gear to reduction of guiding forces Modern railway vehicles, intended for operation at higher speeds, usually show relatively high level of guiding forces in conditions of small radius curves. It is a natural consequence of application of design requirements on high speed running gears ensuring a stable run of the vehicle in straight track sections (rigid wheelset guiding, high bogie yaw resistance). However, these factors lead to a higher lateral force interaction between wheels and rails in curves as well as to a higher level of wear of wheels and rails in the relevant track sections. Besides various passive design solutions (e.g. hydraulic elements of wheelset guiding or bogie couplings), an application of systems of active elements in running gear seems to be an effective way how to reach a significant reduction of guiding forces in small radius curves. This paper deals with an assessment of possible contribution of various systems of active elements in a locomotive running gear to minimization of the guiding forces. The attention is paid to the systems applied in secondary suspension stage (active yaw dampers) as well as in wheelset guiding (active radial wheelset steering), and their comparison. Limits of both concepts are also discussed. The assessment of the active element systems is based on results of multi-body simulations performed by means of the original simulation tool “SJKV” which is being developed at the Faculty of Transport Engineering of the University of Pardubice. locomotive running gear; active elements; guiding forces; small-radius curves; multi-body simulation
