eng DAC: impulse for innovations in railway freight transport? Europe is practically the last continent where a drawbar hook with a screw coupling and buffers are used to couple wagons within the freight trains. In order to solve the shortage of operating staff and to increase the competitiveness of rail freight transport, the Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) project is solved. The potential benefits of DAC and especially electrically controlled brake are indeed considerable. However, it seems nonsensical to try to make DAC wagons and the existing fleet backward compatible. Allowing for the deliberate incompatibility of a new generation of freight wagons can create a unique opportunity for a generational innovation transformation of rail freight.
