eng	Improved Safe-life Prediction of Existing Bridge Structures	Due to high costs of new bridges, ways have been sought for more accurate assessment of the safety and residual life of existing bridges so that they can be operated longer, but without unacceptable risk. The paper informs about several prospective methods for reliability assessment of existing railway (steel) bridges: 1) evaluation of safety against failure due to overloading, based on a new definition of traffic load rating factor, 2) determination of loads and stresses using railway information systems and computer simulation, 3) estimation of fatigue life using Wöhler curve and traffic monitoring, 4) fully probabilistic estimation of remaining life using three-parameter rain-flow analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, 5) estimate of safe life of a bridge structure with cracks using fracture mechanics approach, and 6) better evaluation of inspection results using fuzzy logic and other advanced methods.
