In the laboratories of the Department of Transport Structures, we provide tests of building materials and soils including evaluation and processing. The laboratory facilities enable assessment and testing of materials which are used at construction sites of transport structures. Diagnostic tests of structures are provided, too. Laboratories provide space for interactive discussions in the extent of 2 to 4 hours a day. Very intensive use of the laboratories happens in the period of bachelor and diploma thesis creation, according to the topics selected by students. In 2008, new 300 t press with breaking track was acquired from HEIDF means.

Information Facilities

Department of Transport Structures manages one classroom with computer technology. Both software and hardware equipment of the classroom is on standard level required by contemporary business requirements. CAD systems (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation V8, AllPlan, AllPlan Bridge), FEM systems (ESA Pt, Ansys, GeoMKP, ABAQUS), BIM software ArchiCAD17, ArtlantisStudio V4 visualization system, mikrosimulation traffic model PTV-VISSIM (including Pedestrian modul), and geodetic software Groma and Atlas are available for the needs of design and drawing of transport structures. Students have free access to computer technology and the Internet.

List of Available Laboratory Activities:

  • Static and dynamic tests of metal and concrete elements of bridge structures or their models with special focus on fatigue of material
  • Stress tests of concrete in 300 t press
  • Ordinary tensile strength tests performed within demonstrational education in order to get data of material physical properties (press ED 20)
  • Geotechnical tests (water content, soil suction test, particle-size analysis, direct and triaxial shear stress, oedometer test, California bearing ratio, soil compaction tests)
  • Some types of control tests as required
  • Interactive discussions in subjects: Building Materials, Metal Structures, Plain and Reinforced Concrete Structures, Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering, and Soil Mechanics

Geodetic Facilities

Geodetic field tutorial in structural geodesy is held outdoors, where students can actively practice the discussed curriculum (topography measurement, simple setting-out tasks, detailed hypsography measurement). In terms of technical provision, the education of structural geodesy uses levelling devices, theodolites, rangefinders, total station and GPS Leica system. Education is on standard level required by contemporary business requirements including geodetic facilities.
