eng Tribological and Materials Aspects of the Railway Wheel / Rail Interaction The description of structural changes in railway wheels during operational period. The nature of structure was investigated using light microscopy and microhardness. Due to extreme forces application on the tread surface, crystallic grains are distorted and crushed. This surface changes induce microcracking, that can concentrate stress and accelerate damage. Obtained results show considerable deformation of surface layers (up to approx. 5 mm) as well as initialization of cracks. Microhardness (HV 0.5) proved marked strain hardening up to depth of several tenths of millimeters. Our study characterized two basic mechanisms of cracking formation - thermal initialization and contact-fatigue damage. These two mechanisms can generate different structures, but both contribute to irreversible degradation on the surface of railways wheels. Transport Systems, technology, tribology, wheel treads
