eng Public transport services in the Czech Republic Public transport serves to fulfill the transport needs of citizens of any certain region. It is a kind of living organism which changes in accordance with the changing needs of the inhabitants, their lives, life styles, habits etc., and of course to the change in the area of service requirement. It is quite a natural that efficient public transport system forms the basis for the development of the economy of any nation. Most of the public transport systems are mainly organized and run by the local state government bodies with a miniscule private or commercial participation. This has mainly set no or low competition in the transport sector and has given the impression of cost burden to the Government in the form of subsidized services to the public. This notion of cost burden has found a short term solution in the form of reduction in the number of public vehicles, their frequencies, services, employees etc., It is very essential to note that short term solutions will always result in a temporal mirage kind solution. Hence, it is very important that the competent authorities in this sector have to equip themselves with the wide angles to think various other alternative scopes/areas of working out on costs to achieve efficiencies. The tactics of downsizing the transport system during the economic downturns is no way a permanent solution either to the public or to the economy in the long run. public transport services; competent authorities; railway transport; bus transport
