This study compares powder and flux-cored wire filler metals in welded rail for rebuilding applications, examining their effects on microstructure, structural degradation, mechanical properties, and heat transfer during formation of layers. It emphasizes enhancing resistance to contact fatigue and investigates structural degradation for both filler metals. Plasma technology is evaluated for achieving structural stability, crucial for dynamic strengthening and high fracture toughness. Optical and electron microscopy, alongside mechanical tests, assess microstructural evolution and behavior like spherical indentation and hardness tests, are employed. The role of filler metals in microstructure and mechanical behavior is highlighted, focusing on grain structure, phase distribution, and defects. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis reveals chemical hetrogenity and inclusions sources.
